Watch as NJ Sen. Cory Booker continues marathon speech to protest President Trump

  • New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker began a speech Monday night in protest of President Trump, and continued speaking into Tuesday.

A routine U.S. Senate session became a chance for Democrats to speak out against the actions of the Trump administration on Monday night when Sen. Cory Booker took the floor.

“I rise with the intention of getting in some good trouble,” Booker said at about 7 p.m. Monday. “I rise with the intention of disruption the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able.”

His speech has covered a broad range of topics including the cuts to government programs made by Trump and Elon Musk, tariffs and tax breaks of the rich.

The protest was still going as of 8 a.m. Booker yielded to his Democratic colleagues at times so that they could ask questions but he still held the floor.

Among those to join him on the floor was his New Jersey counterpart Sen. Andy Kim who read social media posts from Garden State residents supporting what Booker was doing.

He said at times that the country is in crisis and what the administration has done is “not normal”

“That’s why we’re here, no business as usual,” he said. “We’re not doing the usual order. We’re talking about things. We’re making the case. We talked about immigration. We talked about health care. We talked about Medicaid. We talked about Medicare. We talked about medical research. We talked about social security. We’re marching through.”

This is not the first time Democrats have held the floor for extended periods. They spoke for 30 consecutive hours earlier this year to delay the confirmation of Russell Vought, the author of Project 2025, to be Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Sen. Chris Murphy held a 15-hour speech back in 2016. He has said on social media Tuesday that when he did so, Booker stayed on the floor with him the whole time, so he was returning the favor.
