Entertainment media company TMZ reports that former Denver Broncos star John Elway was involved in a golf cart incident that resulted in the death of his long-time friend and business partner.
The incident took place in La Quinta, California last Saturday, with Elway’s friend and business partner, 62-year-old Jeff Sperbeck, reportedly falling off of the back of the golf cart while it was in motion, striking his head on asphalt and sustaining a serious injury that would ultimately prove fatal. Elway was the one to place the initial 911 call, with his friend left unconscious, but still breathing at that time.
While Sperbeck was initially reported to be on life-support following the incident, it has since been reported that he died.
TMZ reports that Elway was driving the cart at the time of the incident, which took place following the Stagecoach music festival. It’s also worth noting that TMZ reports that there’s no indication that Elway did something wrong that caused the fall.
No other injuries were reported in the incident. Find additional detail in the in-depth TMZ report about what happened here.
Condolences go out to those involved in this tragic situation and those impacted by Sperbeck’s death.
