‘Damaging wind gusts and hail:’ Second round of storms could hit Mansfield later tonight

Ohioans should be ready for a second round of storms Tuesday night.

Severe weather could hit Richland County between 7-9 p.m., according to Alexa Maines, a meteorologist who works in the Cleveland office of the National Weather Service.

“There’s potential for damaging wind gusts and hail,” Maines said. “It just depends on how much those storms fill in.”

As of 5:15 p.m., there was a 60% chance thunderstorms would develop this evening.

“It’s one of those situations where we have to keep our eye on the radar and see how things develop,” Maines said. “We have to see how things develop over the next couple hours.”

The evening’s weather is unstable because of the humidity, temperature and winds.

“We had a warm front move through this morning and that kind of pulled in some unstable warm, moist air,” Maines said. “That sets the stage for the severe weather.”

The breeze and falling temperatures make tonight’s forecast even more unpredictable.

“That causes a trigger for thunderstorms if there’s enough instability,” Maines said. “It can develop very quickly on the scale of a few minutes to a few hours depending on the environment.”

A storm cloud obstructs an otherwise sunny sky in North Central Ohio.

Ohioans are asked to remain aware of the weather the rest of the evening.

“It’s an evolving situation,” Maines said. “Keep an eye on the forecast. We’re here all evening and issuing warnings as needed.”
