Fever’s Sophie Cunningham gets bad injury update after painful collision originally appeared on The Sporting News
The news isn’t good for Sophie Cunningham.
It took only 15 minutes from when Cunningham went down with a right knee injury for the Indiana Fever to rule her out for the remainder of Sunday’s game.

The injury came in a collision with Connecticut’s Bria Hartley.
Hartley drove to the basket and swung a pass to the corner around Cunningham, who had planted near the lane to confront Hartley. Hartley’s momentum carried her into an awkward crash with Cunningham’s stationary right knee.

This is not something the Fever can afford.
They’re already getting crushed by injuries. Caitlin Clark is out indefinitely with a groin injury that coach Stephanie White says she “hopes” doesn’t keep Clark out past the end of the regular season, which is Sept. 11.

With Clark already out, the Fever had brought in multiple other point guards through the course of the season. But now, both Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald have season-ending injuries, too.
The Fever have been forced to go deeper into the free agent pool to find guard help. Cunningham was a makeshift point guard for a game before former No. 2 overall pick Odyssey Sims came to town.
If Cunningham’s injury is bad, it’ll force Lexie Hull to take more shots. She was very cold a few weeks ago but has slowly started to find her game again.
It’s shaped up like one of those nightmare seasons for the Fever, who in addition to all the injuries also had the bizarre DeWanna Bonner disappearance and departure to deal with early in the year.

The Fever are still in a playoff spot, and they very likely can make the field. And if Clark comes back, they could still be dangerous.
But in the meantime, it’s painful, and certainly nothing like anyone would’ve drawn it up in Indiana.
