Live updatesTrump and Putin meet for Alaska summit over Russia-Ukraine war

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are in Alaska meeting privately to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine. Trump was expected to have a one-on-one meeting with Putin, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff are also in private discussions with Russian officials. While en route in Air Force One, Trump voiced hope that “something’s going to come of” the summit and reiterated that Russia could face “very severe” consequences if it does not move to end the war. For the first time publicly, Trump also said Friday that he is open to the “possibility” of security guarantees for Ukraine, along with other European countries. Trump cautioned that such protections could not come through NATO, however.
