Police lift shelter-in-place order after deadly shooting in North Windham, suspect located

NORTH WINDHAM, Maine (WGME) — Police say a man is dead after a shooting in North Windham on Friday afternoon. The suspect has been located, and the shelter in place order has been lifted.

Maine State Police, Windham Police Department, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a shooting that occurred just before 2 p.m. on Route 302 in North Windham on Friday.

One man was shot and killed. The victim’s name has not yet been released.

“Upon arrival first responders found a lone male who had been shot. Also citizen bystanders were providing life saying measures but the man did not survive,” Chief Kevin Schofield with the Windham Police Department said.

The suspect fled the scene in a silver car and headed toward Raymond.

A shelter in place was in effect in the area for about three hours while a massive manhunt with dozens of officers was underway.

Police say they found the vehicle in a Dunkin’ parking lot in Raymond.

According to police, the suspect was found a short time later. Police would not say if the suspect was found alive or dead. The suspect’s name has not yet been released.

“The lone suspect in this case has been located. There is no threat to the public at this time and that shelter in place has since been lifted,” Major Lucas Hare with the Maine State Police said.

Route 302 in North Windham re-opened to traffic around 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

While searching for the suspect, an alert was sent to Mainers’ phones about the situation.

The alert was sent to Mainers’ phones was done through the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System also known as IPAWS. It is run by the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).

MEMA addressed concerns about why the alert went statewide:

“The IPAWS alert was geo-fenced for the appropriate area. There was a technical error that caused the alert to spread statewide and we are working with the vendor to correct it. The primary concern is that everyone remains safe.”

Police are still asking people to contact them if they know any information about the incident.

‘We will ask if anybody was a witness to the incident or they have information please reach out to the state police or Windham police to report that,” Major Lucas Hare with the Maine State Police said.

Police say at this time they won’t release any more information about either the victim or the suspect, or any possible motive as detectives work to speak with the families and gather more details.
