WINDHAM, Maine — The sole suspect in a deadly shooting incident in Windham has been located, according to law enforcement.
Maine State Police and Windham police held a press conference about the incident at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Windham Central Fire Station at 718 Roosevelt Trail. Law enforcement shared details about the shooting that prompted a shelter-in-place order and shut down Route 302 at Landing Road for several hours. The road reopened around 6:30 p.m.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted for the Windham and Raymond areas shortly before the press conference. The order was put in place at around 4 p.m.
Windham Police Department Chief Kevin Schofield said officers responded immediately to the scene Friday afternoon, where they found a male individual who had been shot. Bystanders reportedly performed life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful. The male was pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement then began searching for a suspect who had fled the scene, Schofield said.
After interviewing several witnesses, a suspect vehicle was found. Maine State Police Major Lucas Hare said the suspect in the shooting incident was located shortly after the vehicle was found.
He would not say whether the suspect was found dead or alive, or if the individual was in custody. Police did not release any information on whether charges would be forthcoming.
There is no danger to the public.
The identities of those involved will not be released until detectives have the chance to speak with family members, Hare said.
The chief medical examiner will be conducting an autopsy “in the near future.”

During the search, an Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) message was sent to people statewide: “Gunman at large in North Windham. Shelter indoors, lock doors. Report suspicious behavior to 911. Last seen Windham/Raymond line. Stay inside. Tune to local news or Windham PD for updates.”
Hare said the message being sent to the entire state was in error.

Maine State Police detectives will continue to work with Windham police during the ongoing investigation.
